Vans Dragon Sk8 2012 Kicks Off in the Heart of Guangzhou
May 5-6, 2012 marked the beginning of this year’s Vans Dragon sk8 Series with Guangzhou playing host to the first of a 7 city tour.  In its fourth year, the Vans Dragon Sk8 Series is designed to empower active participants and welcome mainstream lifestyle consumers to enjoy the spirit & culture of skateboarding. This year’s overall prize purse is a whopping 180,000.00 RMB.  Pro skaters from all over China and other countries in the region came out for the event. The winners from each stop of Vans Dragon SK8 Series will go straight to Hangzhou finals later the year in October.

Although the contest was interrupted by heavy rain, skateboarders still shredded nearly all of the obstacles. Li Zhixing won the Pro Best of Best on Sunday while Ke Jiaen took second and Vans HK team rider Luk Chunyin took third. The AM contest saw incredible performances from local skaters proving that the level of skateboarding in China is on the rise.

Mathew Morgan, from Vans China, was quoted “we were very happy to see such a strong turn out from the core community for this year’s first Vans Dragon Skate Contest.  The level of skateboarding from both the AMs and PROs was incredible at the Guangzhou stop and this made for a very exciting contest.”

Other highlights of the event include the Dragon Tour on the Monday following the contest. Skaters got together to skate spots and build up skate community communication in general. The crew skated the now world famous “red ribbon” and even found a great new spot near Guangzhou’s “university city”.
